Police seek Interpol help in DCIO Mombasa shooting incident

Kenya: Kenya Police have sought assistance from the Interpol to arrest one of the suspects behind last month's shooting of Mombasa criminal investigation boss.

Kenyan detectives say the suspect, Mzee Abulkarim Seraj, who was among the three that allegedly shot DCIO Ndumba Thangarani, has since crossed over to Uganda and have requested Interpol to trace him.

Interpol is a network of police forces from 190 countries all over the world whose job is to help police in different countries work together to solve crimes that cross borders.

In a letter dated September 11, seen obtained by The Standard on Saturday, the detectives say Seraj crossed to Uganda immediately after the shooting incident.

One suspect, Swaleh Abdallah, has so far been arrested and arraigned at a Mombasa court. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The letter states that the DCIO Thangarani and Mombasa OCPD Geoffrey Mayek, were trailing a Toyota Ractis registration number KBZ 527F, which they suspected was occupied by armed men.

It says they lost track of the car due to traffic jam.

Later, they went to Tudor with unmarked vehicles and managed to trace the suspects who are believed to be living at Tudor in Mombasa County.

The officers, however, found a Toyota Allion registration number KBZ 533K parked on the roadside.

The two officers stopped and alighted from their vehicle to interrogate the occupants of the Allion.

"The occupants shot at them without warning, injuring the DCIO on the stomach while the OCPD was unhurt. They then sped off," reads the letter.

The DCIO was taken to Mombasa Hospital where he was admitted and is still undergoing treatment.
