Cardinal Otunga Mosocho Where ‘common sense’ shaped the ‘Dream Team’

The school whose anthem goes Cardinal kipenzi changu nitakutumikia mile na milele was a statement of aristocracy in its prime.

Cardinal Otunga Mosocho was founded in 1961 as St James High School Nyabururu, nearly seven kilometres from its present location. It was formed at the request of Cardinal Otunga, who was the bishop of the Diocese of Kisii.

It was not until 1963 that it moved to its present location under the first principal, Innocent D’Cok. What they left behind would later become Nyabururu Girls.

The school drew students from all over the country into its red-bricked buildings that distinguished it from its peers in the region.

The school, located in Mosocho on the Kisii-Luo border and home to former Cabinet minister, Dr Zachary Onyonka (father to Richard Onyonka, MP Kitutu Chache North) had ‘Common Sense’ as its motto.

It was here that Cleophas Ondieki, who penned arguably the best secondary school History textbook in the 8-4-4 era that guaranteed ‘As’, taught.

Some of the alumni who sang the motto Common Sense include: President Moi’s Dream Team members — former KCB CEO Martin Oduor-Otieno and Kenya Airways CEO, Titus Naikuni, political analyst Barrack Muluka, legendary KBC sports broadcaster, Jack Oyoo Silvester, engineer Henry Odede, former media boss, Cyrille Nabutola, politicians Dalmas Otieno, Simon Ogari and the late Kipkalya Kones. Rumour has it that as of 2011, nearly half the Kenyan diplomatic community had gone through Cardinal Otunga.

Everyone hopes as the clamour for the venerable Cardinal to be anointed to Sainthood surges on, eleven years since he died, the school will find its old mojo.
