Mother who abandoned three-week old baby charged in Nyeri court

Nyeri, Kenya: A woman who abandoned a three-week old baby at the offices of courier services company in Nyeri has been charged before a Nyeri court.

Priscilla Wambui admitted abandoning the baby boy on July 31, 2014, at the G4S offices in Nyeri, where the child's father, Aloysius Muchori, works.

Ms Wambui, who resides in Meru, surrendered to the police a day after news of the shocking incident circulated in the media.

Wambui said she resolved to take the baby to its father because the latter had allegedly failed to provide for them.

Initially, Muchori had denied having prior knowledge of the child's existence but later on conceded he was the father.

Hours after the child was found wrapped in a window's curtain, Nyeri Sub County Children's Officer Idah Kawira, stated that cases of children being abandoned in the area were on the rise.

Nyeri Resident Magistrate John Aringo ordered the child, currently under the custody of children's welfare department, be given to its mother for temporary upkeep until Monday next week when the case resumes.
