MPs put police chiefs on the spot over flawed recruitment

Kenya: Top police chiefs were yesterday upbraided for failing to tame corruption, favouritism and nepotism in the police recruitment that was done a fortnight ago.

The House Committee on National Security and Administration told the National Police Service Commission chairman Johnstone Kavuludi, Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, his deputy Grace Kaindi, and the Director of Criminal Investigations Department Ndegwa Muhoro, that it was futile for them to expect people who had bribed their way to the police jobs to own up.

"I know and we know, that money changed hands. But it is difficult to get the evidence," said Alice Wahome (Kandara).

Kuresoi South MP Zakayo Cheruiyot added that the recruiting officers in his constituency solicited bribes.

MPs Wanjiku Muhia (Nyandarua), John Waluke (Sirisia) and Abdikadir Ore (Wajir West) told Kavuludi and Kimaiyo and their colleagues to quit for having wasted public funds on a fraudulent recruitment process.

The committee gave Kavuludi 14 days to give an audit showing the recruits who were picked.
