Traffic officers manning the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road nabbed the suspect in the act a few kilometers from Naivasha town after a tip-off from members of the public.

The incident raised anxiety in the lakeside town which in the past has been rearing from case of donkey slaughter.

During the incident, the police managed to recover several rolls of bhang, a knife, a skinned dog’s leg as officers from the public health moved in to charge the suspect.

Tens of members of the public and motorists milled at the scene where the dog had been partially skinned.

To the shock of the onlookers, the suspect admitted that he had been eating dog meat terming it as a delicacy.

The handcuffed suspect identified as Antony Nuthu said that he could not stand back and watch as the dog went to waste.

A motorcycle operator Peter Mwaura admitted that cases of meat hawking was on the increase in some estates in the area.

He expressed his concern over the quality and source of samosa that the residents were feeding and called for thorough investigations into the incident.

“We suspect that this kind of meat is being sold in areas were second generation alcohol is taken as the drunkards won’t notice anything amiss,” he said.

Naivasha sub-county public health officer Caroline Vata who arrived at the scene however down played the incident terming it as the first in the area.

She called on members of the public to buy inspected meat from certified butcheries adding that they would thoroughly investigate the case.

“We have arrested the suspect who is in police custody and he shall be charged in court facing various offences,” she said.

The move comes barely a day after the public health officer noted with concern the increase in cases of food hawking and cooking in many estates and streets around the town.

“We have launched a major operation against those involved in cooking and selling food along the streets as this is illegal and unhealthy,” she said.
