Kenya police to lease five choppers in fight against crime

NAIROBI, KENYA: Plans are underway to lease five helicopters to help the police in the war against crime.

The national Treasury has invited manufacturers, dealers, leasing companies and financial institutions and interested firms to bid for a tender advertised for provision of helicopters for the police.

The interested firms have until August 15 to express their interest.

The successful companies will provide transport troop carriers and utility helicopters to the officers.

"Expression of interest should include full maintenance capacity including availability of spare parts and other required components as and when they are required," reads part of the advert.

The advert adds there should be evidence of successfully completed lease contracts of similar nature in the past five years. Companies that will bid are required to have a turnover of about Sh400 million per year.

The Interior Ministry has proposed allocation of a staggering Sh1.1 billion to overhaul three old MI-17 Russian choppers that have been grounded in a year, Sh18 billion for purchase of 10 helicopters in five years and Sh1 billion to hire two helicopters for four years. The move comes in the wake of revelations that police have only one operating chopper.
