Sierra Leonean Ebola doctor infected among those infected

FREETOWN: A medical doctor in charge of the ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone has been diagnosed with the ebola disease, the Health Ministry confirmed Wednesday.

The ministry also confirmed the death of three veteran nurses of the centre in eastern city of Kenema on Tuesday.

This situation caused panic in the centre as the remaining nurses of the centre went on a temporary strike demanding relocation of the ebola centre from the district hospital.

The director of information and communication department in the Health Ministry, Yaya Tunis, described the current situation as "very challenging," noting that the nurses were a "source of hope and inspiration to their junior colleagues".

Civil society and a group of journalists have appealed to the President Ernest Bai Koroma to cancel his planned trip to the Afro- American summit to be held in US shortly and concentrate on the ebola issue at home which has claimed the lives of hundreds of his compatriots.

Meanwhile the number of laboratory confirmed cases of ebola issued Wednesday has gone up to 409 whilst the death toll has reached 146.
