Police arrest Nigerian after narcotics burst in his stomach

NAIROBI, KENYA: A Nigerian was arrested in Nairobi when narcotics he was carrying burst in his belly prompting his hospitalisation.

The middle-aged man had arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi from Lagos while on transit when the incident happened.

The airline that was to fly him out with other passengers to an Asian country booked him at the Laico Regency on Wednesday morning.

Minutes after his arrival at the hotel, he fell sick prompting officials there to rush him to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH)

The officials first called the Tourist Police Unit who oversaw his transfer to KNH.

Head of Anti-Narcotics Unit Hamis Masa said as doctors at the hospital struggled to attend to him they realised he had inserted several pellets of drugs into his anal system that had burst.

"It was then that he started to emit the pellets as the doctors struggled to attend to him to contain the situation," said Masa.

Masa said it was normal for airlines to book their passengers on transit in hotels while waiting for the time to fly out.

He added they are yet to test and weigh the contents of the pellets to know the nature and value.
