Residents of Mushagala village in Kirinyaga almost burnt down a church on claims it is ruining their young girls.

The residents threatened to torch the End Time Believers Tabernacle claiming a bishop and an elder were presiding over marriage of underage school girls to elderly bishops.

Chief Isaac Kabengi of Kariru location where the little-known denomination operates, says the residents are not opposed to the church, but its family doctrines which allowed a bishop and a church elder to secretly marry two underage girls from Trans Nzoia County.

Bernard Mwaura, a teacher from the village, termed the alleged act by the clerics as an abomination of moral values.

The bishop, a night guard at a nearby secondary school, and the elder, a slaughterhouse attendant at the Mushagala market, were arrested and taken to Kirinyaga Police Station.

According to Kirinyaga East sub-county police boss George Kingi, the bishop (Gatua Kibabai) and the elder (Peter Muriithi) were released from custody after medical examination reports showed the girls were adults.

Bernard Munene, a faithful at the church, defended his bishop and extensively quoted from the Old Testament, claiming there’s nothing wrong in an old man marrying a young woman.

Munene said that although he was still single, he has since identified a woman to marry, plus four others he intends to wed later after confirming his union with the first wife.

Kingi said the parents of the girls have since confirmed they had given their blessings for the girls to be married because they were performing poorly in school.
