Police forced to fire teargas at Uhuru Park to calm down the crowd

Nairobi, Kenya: The crowd gathered at Uhuru Park for the Saba Saba rally were getting unruly forcing the police to fire teargas and shoot in the air to try and calm them down.

The crowd seems to be mixed with hooligans and genuine supporters, but so far the police have been able to calm the situation and restore order.  Meanwhile Businesses were also affected as several traders in Nairobi and Kisumu opted to close their shops fearing violence and looting from demonstrates.

CORD leaders assured Kenyans that the Saba Saba rally will be peaceful as they have been holding people's consultative forums across the country peacefully and do not expect their supporters to cause chaos.

"Kenyans should not be afraid. There is nothing to fear. We have been holding several rallies in the country and we have been peaceful. I have heard they have sent 15,000 police officers yet there is insecurity in the country. For us our security is the people," said Raila.

The CORD leader maintained that the sovereignty of Kenya belongs to Kenyans and is exercised by people directly or by elected leaders.
