Stop selling family land, widows cautioned

Siaya, Kenya: An administrator has raised concern over the rate at which widows in Siaya County’s Rarieda constituency are selling their land.

South Asembo Chief Wilson Aliech cautioned the widows desist from the habit.

Mr Aliech, at the same time, warned them to stop engaging in the business of selling illicit brews.

Drug abuse

The chief, who was addressing the public in his South Asembo location, also cautioned youths in the area against engaging in drug abuse and instead embark on income generation activities that can improve their livelihoods.

He decried the high rate at which youths in the region were imbibing chang’aa to an extent that they can no longer be productive members of the society.

Bondo Assistant Deputy County Commissioner Samson Diero Akatch also warned Bondo residents against unlawful selling of land, which has become rampant in the region.

Mr Akatch regretted that some families have been left landless after unknown people in the families sold their entire pieces of land without their knowledge.

Land brokers

“In the recent past, there has been an increase in the number of land brokers and unscrupulous dealers who con families of their money after selling their land before disappearing,” he noted, adding that about five such cases have been reported in Bondo.

Speaking to The Standard in Bondo, the administrator warned that no piece of land would be sold without following the proper channel.

He said illegal sale of land impacts negatively on many families.
