Rugby: Kakamega crowned Great Rift schools champs

Former National Secondary Schools Sevens Champions Kakamega High are the Top Fry Great Rift Ten Aside Secondary Schools Ten Aside champions.

They rolled over stubborn New Dawn Education Centre 14-12 in a tough final tie at Nakuru Athletic Club on Friday evening.

New Dawn shocked the winners with a 3rd minute touch down by Philip Oluoch and Boaz Wangila did converted to take a 7-0 lead.

Kakamega boys fought like a wounded lion and the man of the match Rogasian Odhiambo made a fast run at left flank to make a touch down. Byron Odhiambo converted to force a 7-7 tie four minutes to half time mark.

However, Wangila combined with Oluoch to score an easy try but missed the conversion for them to lead 12-7 at half time.

In the second half Odhiambo (Rogasian) beat his markers to score 12-12. Charles Kuka converted to return his team to their glorious days in local rugby scene.

Immediately after the final whistle, the Kakamega Boys made several laps of honour singing war and praise songs in Luhya language with a lot of applause to their technical bench headed by Humphrey Kisala and Paul Weloba.

In the semis, Kakamega High dismantled their next-door neighbours Kakamega Academy 20-10 while New Dawn humbled Nakuru Academy 29-0.

Meanwhile, Community Rugby Association(CRA) won the Under 15

championships after overcoming New Life 5-0 in a deadly final match.

In the semis, CRA defeated Mini Rugby by the same margin as New Life did the same to Resolution Impala Saracens.

CRA also lifted the Under-15 girls’ championships after leading the three-team competition with four points followed by Baysun two and Top Fry Nakuru RFC trailed with a point.

New Life won the Under 12 Mini Rugby championships with 15 points ahead of Top Fry Nakuru RFC 12, Living Fountain eight, Kaptemwa four, Baharini three and Resolution Impala Saracens one point.
