City contracts company to collect revenue

Nairobi, Kenya: The Nairobi County government has contracted an e-payment firm to collect revenue on its behalf, making Nairobi the second city in Africa after Johannesburg to outsource revenue collection.

JamboPay Ltd beat 65 other local and international competitors to emerge tops in a stiff tendering process for the multi-billion shilling contract, guided by the audit firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the Information Communication and Technology Authority and Nairobi County government technical teams.

Losers in this new deal include several local banks among them Kenya Commercial Bank, Family Bank, Commercial Bank of Africa, mobile service provider Safaricom, global ICT brand, IBM and vehicle manufacturing company, Tata.

Announcing the winner of the tender, Governor Evans Kindero said he was impressed a Kenyan youth-driven and managed firm emerged tops in the hotly contested procurement process that commenced in August last year. “This partnership is a statement of endorsement of trust and support of Nairobi County Government to youth enterprise, local knowledge and expertise. It is a game-changer in stamping out corruption,” said Kidero.
