Defending champions KCB are seeded first in this year’s Top Fry sponsored edition of the Great Rift 10-Aside tournament, which  kicks-off at Nakuru Athletic Club tomorrow.

The bankers, who won the title last year after overcoming University of Nairobi 10-0, are pooled together with Egerton University, Comras and Bungoma in Pool A. They lead the 24 team competition, which starts with the Secondary Schools competition.

The bankers look wounded after losing in the Enterprise Cup finals against Top Fry Nakuru. The host side still have their eyes cast on the great Rift 10-Aside title  besides the Kenya Cup League title.

Nakuru, who are currently enjoying top form, have qualified for the Kenya Cup semi-final and will face Strathmore Leos on May 10 at Nakuru Athletic Club.

Group paring

Nakuru are in Pool F alongside Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad, Technical University of Kenya and Thika RFC.

Mean Machine is the top seeded team in Pool B, which has Mwamba, Multi Media University and KCA University. Homeboyz, Western Bulls, Masaku RFC and University of East Africa are in Pool C.

Former champions Resolution Impala Saracens, Strathmore Leos, Kabras RFC and Moi University are in Pool D while Pool E has Lunch Bar Kenya Harlequin, Eldoret RFC, Catholic University and Stormers.

The 24-teams that face each in the first preliminary matches will have the last sixteen teams get dropped to lesser competitions. The  first eight proceed to the Main Cup quarters.

Prize pack

This time round, the winner of the tournament and outstanding players in different categories will take home cash prizes with Sh160,000 up for grabs according to tournament director Ian Mwangi.

“The fact that we have prizes for the winning team and outstanding players will make the tournament more competitive and players aggressive,” said Mwangi.

Menengai Oil Refinery Limited, who are the title sponsors, have injected Sh4million into the three-day competition.

Other sponsors are the Standard Media Group, Coca Cola Limited, East Africa Breweries Limited, Reliable Concretes, Evans Hospital, Rafikis Restaurant, Fresh, Kabras Sugar and Ornet Communications.

Meanwhile, there will be another eight team tournament that will feature Nakuru II, Molo, Chipu, Mumias, Kisumu, Brumbies, Kisii and KEMU. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the cup semis while the bottom two drop to the bowl competition.       — [email protected]
