By Patel Okumu Nairobi, Kenya: Leading South Africa-based financial services group Sanlam – the majority shareholder in insurance group, Pan Africa Life,  Wednesday announced that it would donate Sh1 million to the Africa Cancer Foundation to support the organisation in its efforts to raise cancer awareness and screening in Kenya.

Cancer is one the main causes of death in Kenya, killing over 20000 people annually. The announcement was made at a media function at Sankara Hotel attended by Sanlam Group CEO, Dr Johan van Zyl and Sanlam Emerging Markets CEO, Mr Heinie Werth as well as Tom Gitogo, CEO of Pan Africa Life.

Sanlam has been in operation since 1918 and provides life and short term insurance, investment services and credit among other financial products in Africa, Asia, India, Europe, the United States and Australia. Sanlam has been in partnership with Pan Africa Insurance since 2005.

Speaking at the event, Dr Van Zyl said that the group has been deeply involved in fighting cancer in South Africa for many years through a variety of initiatives and fundraising events. “It is a cause that is very close to our hearts, we are therefore delighted to extend our efforts to the nation of Kenya and look forward to working with our partners at Pan Africa Life on this initiative.”

In South Africa, Sanlam has partnered with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and uses the Sanlam Cancer Challenge amateur golf tournament as the primary vehicle to raise funds for CANSA to aid in their efforts to fight the scourge of cancer. The Sanlam Cancer Challenge has been held since 1993 and has raised the equivalent of Ksh300 million over the years. It has provided support to over 14 000 people with cancer in South Africa.

In partnership with the Africa Cancer Foundation, Pan Africa Life will carry out countrywide cancer awareness and screening campaign. This will be supported by a series of golf tournaments to raise money for the fight against cancer. “A portion of the golfers’ registration fees will go towards the programme of prevention, early detection and more affordable treatment. Players will also be able to undergo free screening and the winners will participate in the 2014 Sanlam Cancer Challenge in South Africa.

“We look forward to welcoming the winners of the local tournament to the 2014 Sanlam Cancer Challenge in South Africa. In partnership with Pan Africa Life, we can extend the fight against cancer throughout Kenya,” concluded Van Zyl.
