MP says police, fruit farms harassing residents

Maragua, KENYA: Maragua Member of Parliament Peter Kamande claimed yesterday that police were intimidating his constituents.

The MP said several people including his personal assistants have in the recent been arrested and charged after making inquiries at Kabati Police Station about arrest of residents of Wempa area.

Kamande said the residents were arrested during swoops only to face counts of trespassing pineapple growing estates in the area and being in possession of stolen fruits.

He accused two multinational companies operating in the area of being behind the arrests.

 He said, they have also established that security guards secretly harvest pineapples  after police swoops in Wempa areas which are presented as evidence against the suspects in court. “A month ago, one of the CDF officers together with a personal assistant to are County Women Representative Sabina Wanjiru Chege were arrested when they visited Kabati Police Station to complain about the arbitrary arrests,” he said.
