Champions slip: Hosts Lake Region sink as National Primary Schools Games kick off in Kisumu

Hosts Lake Region started their football title defense on a sour note after going down 2-1 to Nakuru Region in the boys’ opening match of the National Primary Schools Ball and Gymnasium games.

Evans Ongayo of Lake Region was the first to see the back of the net in the 14th minute but his goal was cancelled by Kevin Koech 14 minutes later before Ibrahim Ekale notched the winner for the Nakuru side in the 48th minute at Kisumu Polytechnic grounds yesterday.

In the girls’ category Lake Region raised the hopes of the hundreds of fans that had turned up to watch the games after thrashing Nzoia Region 6-2 in their opening match.  

Eunice Auma was the hero of the day, scoring a hat-trick for the Lake Region before Lavender Lihemo gave Nzoia Region a brace for a 3-2 score line at the breather.

Three minutes

In the second half it only took the hosts three minutes to add another goal through Lucy Mugambi, Yvonne Akinyi and Asha Atieno for a 6-2 score line during the event which saw Kisumu County government officials skip the opening ceremony  at Lions School and Kisumu Polytechnic.

Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma, his Executive Officer in Charge of Sports Jeniffer Kerre and County Director of Sports Zackary Okora had earlier been invited to the ceremony. 

The County Director of Education Sylvester Mulamba officially opened the games. 

Mulamba said: “ I take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the Lake Region.”

As at kick off time, teams from Garissa Region had not arrived, prompting a change in the draws. The Garisa Region teams, however, arrived yesterday.

Arrivie late

Kenya National Primary Schools Sports Association Chairman Joseph Koteli confirmed that Garrisa Region teams would arrive late for the games but will be allowed to play their preliminary matches to be able to participate in today’s semi-finals.

Koteli said that the Garrisa teams were delayed after their bus developed mechanical problems at Thika before being impounded by the police at Mai Mahiu area for breaching the night travel ban rule.

ender scored one goal for the victory during the rout.  In handball, Nzoia defeated Aberdare Region 24-9 in pool A match as Aberdare Region edged Coast 3-2 (25-14, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-8 in volleyball boys. The games continue today.
