Workers to earn according to their output, says SRC

Kenya: The Salaries and Remuneration Commission  (SRC) has said that its  long-term goal is to ensure that every worker is paid according to his or her performance.

The commission said that this will be implemented after  completion of public hearings and holding of a national conference on the wage bill next month.

SRC Commissioner Isaiah Kubai  said drastic measures were going to be implemented including job evaluations, scrapping of allowances and introduction of performance contracts for all civil servants.

“We are going to take drastic measures on allowances and performance of duties and we know people will fight back,” Kubai said.

He said the only way to succeed in reducing the wage bill is for the ordinary mwananchi to stand firm and fight for State funds to be used for their intended purposes.

Kubai, who was speaking at Chuka University during a wage bill public forum, said the wage bill had ballooned but production remained low.

He said the performance contracts were going to be administered to every public worker to ensure they achieve full production.

“The performance contracts will ensure people are paid according to the production they achieve in their various duties.”

Kubai claimed most people who earned huge salaries were the laziest in the society.

Kubai said they would sustain the job evaluation and start a wage policy to achieve sustainable wage levels as a lasting solution to the wage bill crisis.
