Non-performing chief executives put on notice

Nakuru, Kenya: Members of the Nakuru County Assembly have now trained their guns on non-performing county executive committees accusing them of failing to deliver on their mandates.

The MCAs have identified the Water and Environment Chief Executive Richard Rop as one of the officers who have failed to deliver, one year down the line. With dumpsites in the county overflowing and garbage littering many towns, the leaders put on notice non-performing officers saying they are ready to crack the whip.

The MCAs said Mr Rop had failed to act yet there were enough resources allocated to him to clean the county. Led by the County Implementation Committee Chairman Simon Wanyoike, the MCAs issued a one-week ultimatum to the officer to act or they would take unspecified action.

“Some of the county executives are failing Governor Kinuthia Mbugua in their duties and we are not going to allow this to happen,” Mr Wanyoike said.

He said Naivasha Sub County has garbage littered all over, adding that they had raised the issue with Rop, but he had failed to act.

“We will not hesitate to take action against the county minister for environment because he has failed in his duties in spite of the funds allocated to his ministry,” he said.

Wanyoike, who is the Lakeview Ward county rep, said they will summon Rop to explain why the issue has never been addressed a year since he took office.

Speaking to the Press in Naivasha, Wanyoike said children were now playing in fields littered with garbage and were likely to get diseases associated with poor sanitation.

“We fear disease outbreak in the area as the rains are here and the garbage has not been collected for a long time,” he said.

Reached for comment, Rop said they were looking for land for dumpsites and cemeteries for Naivasha and Molo sub counties.

He said all dumpsites in the area were full, noting that his officers were looking for alternative sites.
