Women need to protect, build each other

Nakuru, Kenya:  The International Women’s day falls today and the theme this year is “Inspiring Change”.

Women are still fighting each other to achieve what they want; yet the same women are still fighting with men in the name of equality.

Fighting two enemies is exhausting and I believe the moment we stop undercutting each other, the path to equality will be clear.

As women the challenges we face only we can understand and only we can solve them.

We need to inspire change among ourselves and society in order to achieve our goals and be respected as women.

We need to work together, build each other and protect each.

Let us not be the first people to gossip on how a fellow woman is being battered by her husband but be the first to protect the lady from her abusive spouse.

I see a lot of women being verbally abused by matatu conductors yet the people who laugh at them are women – women who would rather laugh and let it pass instead of condemning the conductor!

If we want change we have to be the ones to inspire it. As cliché as all this may sound, it all begins with us.
