MP charged with handling stolen goods

Nakuru, Kenya: A court in Nakuru was Tuesday told how stolen road signs and street light poles were traced to a house belonging to a Member of Parliament.

The items, according to the witnesses, were found at an abandoned home said to belong to Nakuru East MP David Gikaria, who was also present in court.

Council askaris at the now defunct Nakuru Municipal Council told Chief Magistrate Samuel Mungai that they were led by two men who were found vandalising street lights to the home of the then Lakeview Ward councillor.

The two council askaris were testifying in a case in which the MP is charged with stealing 21 steel electric posts, 23 lanterns and one sign post, all worth Sh893,200.

The MP who is out on a Sh60,000 cash bail is alternatively charged with being in possession of stolen goods belonging to the Nakuru Municipal Council.

The two offences were allegedly committed between July 2 and 4, 2012 at Lake View Estate in Nakuru.
