Deputy President William Ruto has urged African countries to make laws that resonate with their values and resist any Western directives. The Deputy President said Africa should redefine its destiny and set its own priorities.

Ruto spoke in Abuja, Nigeria, during the country’s centenary celebrations. He was representing President Uhuru Kenyatta during the festivities.

“Africa should redefine its own narrative and must resist those who want to dictate our destiny. We should set our priorities… Africa should decide what laws to set and what laws to follow,” he said.

He added: “We must resist those who think we are a continent defined by disease, bad governance, violence and corruption. We are a continent of the 21st century.”

Ruto also urged Africa to unite in the fight against terrorism. “Terrorism is a global phenomenon requiring dedicated multinational effort to eradicate. Responses to insecurity must, therefore, incorporate its full context to be successful,” he added.

“We are aware that there are insurgent and terrorist groups who have done their utmost to wreak death violently and destroy our society.”

He said Kenya shares what Nigeria has frequently confronted – evil and vicious elements. Ruto urged Nigeria and her neighbours to unite to secure the region.
