President Uhuru Kenyatta to attend AU summit in Addis Ababa

President Uhuru Kenyatta flew out of the country yesterday evening to attend the 22nd Extra-Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During the summit, the African leaders will also review their relationship with the International Criminal Court (ICC).

They are expected to discuss the report of the 12th session of the Assembly of States Parties during which their efforts to give immunity to serving Heads of State were thwarted.

The agenda

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, however, maintained that AU has achieved most of its agenda on the continent’s relationship with the global court.

During the annual ASP conference in The Hague last November, the AU successfully rallied other states to amend the rules of procedure which effectively allows defendants with extra-ordinary public duties to skip court sittings.

But ahead of the Summit that kicks off today, The Coalition for the International Criminal Court, a civil society organisation with offices in 150 countries, warned that the AU must live up to its commitment to peace and justice.
