A woman, 27, killed her three children, seriously injured a fourth one and then took her own life at Matulo village in Siritanyi on the outskirts of Bungoma town.

Residents woke up yesterday morning to the horrific scene after the woman butchered her children with a kitchen knife.

A resident who went to a kiosk operated by the woman became suspicious when her knock on the door went unanswered. On checking the residence behind the kiosk, she found bodies of the four.

Three bodies of the children lay in a pool of blood while the woman’s body was dangling from the roof.

The husband of the deceased, Mr Andrew Lunani, who works as a guard at Kanduyi Children Home, was on duty when the incident happened.

He told police that he had not disagreed with his wife and they had been married for nine years.

“We are conducting investigations to find out the motive of the killings as the husband of the deceased woman maintains that they had no quarrel,” Bungoma South OCPD Kirunya Limbitu said.

The bodies were taken to the Bungoma District Hospital mortuary.

A fourth child aged eight, who survived the ordeal, was rushed to hospital.

In another incident, a man killed his wife as his children watched then took his own life at Mai Mahiu in Naivasha.

The man, in his late 50s, committed suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom, hours after strangling his wife.

The man, said to be a sand harvester, had earlier quarrelled with the mother of four.

According to the dead man’s son, his parents had on various occasions clashed over his mother’s drunkenness.

Night fight

An emotional Kevin Mburu (son) said his sister called him in the morning following a fight between their parents.

“I found my dad with a rope and my mother lying in a corner covered in blankets and I knew something was wrong,” he said.

The Form Three student said the father attempted to commit suicide but they stopped him.

“He asked for water and as we went to the kitchen to collect it, he locked himself in the bedroom and hanged himself,” said Mburu.

Naivasha OCPD Charles Kortok said investigations into the incident had been launched.
