Seventeen senior police officers reshuffled in a bid to bolster security

Nairobi, Kenya: Seventeen senior police officers have been moved in a reshuffle announced by Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo Wednesday.

The changes are aimed at bolstering security in the country.

Former police spokesman Charles Owino who has been acting as the in charge of security at Vigilance House has been named as the new Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Njoro.

The chief police armourer Joel Kitili has been moved to Rift Valley as the Regional Co-ordinator and swapped positions with Peter Oduori.

Julius Kanampiu who has been at police headquarters has been moved to Kimaiyo’s office while Charles Mumanthi has been moved to Kiganjo police college training wing.

Others named to new positions include David Birechi (Vigilance), Francis Warui (Vigilance), Moses Lubisia (Vigilance operations), Esau Echorokodi (Kajiado Central OCPD), Amos Owang (Vigilance), and Stephen Ngetich (Kiambu).

Starehe OCPD Samuel Anampiu was moved to Kipkelion in the same capacity and replaced by Namukwaywa Baraza.

Kimaiyo also named Patrick Macharia as OCPD Nandi South and Joseph Oruku the police boss for West Pokot while Tom Mboya Okoth is now the deputy OCPD Mombasa.

Sources said more changes are expected within CID and could be announced by Friday. It is not clear if the National Police Service Commission was informed of the changes because the commissioners are in Botswana on an official trip.

An official said it was unlikely the commission was informed and hinted the transfer of Owino had been in contention in many ways.

Kimaiyo and the commission have in the past differed over transfers, which were deemed illegal.

Early this month Kimaiyo moved North Eastern Regional Coordinator (RC) Mr Charlton Mureithi to Nairobi and replaced him with Mr Henry Barmao.

The new Eastern RC is Mr Yaa Baya, formerly the chief licencing officer. He replaced Mr Mercus Ochola who was moved to Kiganjo Police College as the deputy commandant.
