Mother, daughter raped at gunpoint in Kayole

NAIROBI, KENYA: A mother and her daughter were Tuesday night raped and robbed of their valuables in a bizarre attack in their house in Kayole area, Nairobi.

The woman aged 42 and her daughter 22 were gang raped at gunpoint by a gang of three after being robbed of Sh3,000, four mobile phones and other valuables in the attack.

Police said the gang had cut doors into the victims’ house in Chokaa area before forcing their way in.

Attempts by the victims to raise alarm were thwarted after the gang threatened to kill them.

Nairobi County police commander Benson Kibui said the victims had moved to the house less than a month ago.

“It seems the gang had been monitoring them before they struck. We will get them,” said Kibui.

He added police have been mobilised to hunt down the attackers with an aim of arresting them and knowing their motive of such an attack.

The two women are admitted in one of the city hospitals where they are receiving treatment.

Rape is one of the most heinous crimes in the society which is however on the increase.

For instance, rape cases increased to 383 between January and May this year as compared to the 332 in 2012 and 297 in 2011 while defilement cases hit 1,216 in 2013 as compared to the 1,428 in 2012 and 1,291 in 2011.

Police data show incest cases hit 86 since January as compared to th 92 of last year and 118 of 2011 while there were five cases of bestiality since January, three the same period last year and six in 2011.

The statistics show there were 883 cases in 2012, 1,051 in 2011, 699 in 20101, 943 in 2009 and 1,034 in 2008. There were more female rapists in 2012 than those reported in 2011.

According to the report there were 44 female rapists in 2012, 27 in 2011, 138 in 2010, four in 2009 and 222 in 2008. This is in contrast to the 839 male rapists that were reported in 2012, 1,024 in 2011, 561 in 2010, 939 in 2009 and 812 in 2008.

The report says there 3,217 defilement cases last year, 3,352 in 2011, 2,808 in 2010, 2,285 in 2009 and 1,628 in 2008 while there were 308 cases of incest in 2012, 247 in 2011, 363 in 2010, 185 in 2009 and 100 in 2008.

Police say there is need for general civic education on the crime for better understanding on its impact on the society.
