President Uhuru says official drinking hours must be observed

NAIROBI, KENYA: The government has reiterated commitment to reduce alcohol consumption among youth in the country.

Speaking on Friday, President Uhuru Kenyatta said as a measure the government will ensure that the stipulated official drinking hours be observed to the latter.

“I am once again calling on the youth to shun retrogressive practices of drug abuse and consumption of illicit brews, you should direct your energies towards activities that will improve on your lives,” he said in Nakuru.

In this regard, the President said the government will ensure that the stipulated official drinking hours are observed to the latter.

New alcohol law prohibits selling of alcohol before 5pm on weekdays and 2pm at weekends, and after 11pm all week.

He told elected leaders at the two levels of government (County and National government) to settle down and formulate the necessary policies and legislation that would improve the lives of Kenyans.

The President further impressed on leaders at the two levels of government to embrace dialogue and consultations on all issues affecting Kenyans to ensure participation in the final decisions affecting wananchi.

Saying the time for politicking was over, President Kenyatta called all Kenyans to now shun divisive activities and direct their energies towards initiatives that would promote peace and unity in the country.

Uhuru challenged leaders to avoid unnecessary wrangles that would deter them from fulfilling their mandate.
