Nairobi, Kenya: Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has appointed a team of prosecutors to assist and guide police investigating the death of Mutula Kilonzo.

The team to be headed by Senior Assistant DPP Grace Murungi is supposed to assist and guide the team of police led by deputy head of investigations at CID headquarters Mr Pius Macharia.

“Further, I do direct that upon completion of these investigations, do kindly cause the resultant inquiry file to be submitted to this office for perusal and appropriate direction,” said Tobiko in a letter to Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo.

Tobiko’s move is indicates the seriousness that his office is giving the death of the Makueni Senator whose body was discovered in his bed on Saturday long after he had died.

The investigators have been unable to point the time and cause of his death but have since recorded statements from almost a dozen of people.

Those interrogated include workers at his Maanzoni home where he died. The team on Monday said samples of food they collected from the scene are still preserved to wait for the results of the post-mortem exercise that is scheduled to be conducted Tuesday.

The samples will be tested by experts locally and internationally and the Government Chemists to establish if they contained any poison that may have caused the death, said an officer in the team.

Meanwhile, the burial of the late senator is scheduled for Wednesday May 9.
