The nominees of the police leadership have been unveiled with director of Kenya National Focal Point David Kimaiyo leading the pack of those poised to be named as the first Inspector General of Police.

Mr Kimaiyo is followed by his deputy John Ochieng’ and Ms Grace Kaindi, the commandant of the Kenya Airports Police Unit in ranking.

Kimaiyo scored 86 percent, Ochieng 78 percent and Kaindi 69 percent.

In the Deputy Inspector General of Police category, CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro is ranked first with 89 percent followed by Judy Jebet Ndeda of Railways Police unit with 86 percent and former spokesman Jasper Ombati with 85 percent.

In AP, current acting commandant Samuel Arachi leads in ranking with 90 percent followed by Deputy CID Director Gideon Kimilu 87 percent and police officer David Ngondi 85 percent.

The ranking was done by the National Police Service Commission, which has been in a secret meeting since Saturday.

The names on each category will be forwarded to both President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga Wednesday for consideration and appointment.

The two principals will name the DIGs for regular and AP but will have to send the names of the three nominees of the Inspector General to Parliament for approval.

One of the three successful commanders would have to be a woman in accordance with the constitution.

A total of 27 candidates who had been shortlisted for the three positions were interviewed by the commission.

This means if Parliament approves the name of the IG, the country will hold elections under new police commanders.

Chairman of the commission Johnston Kavuludi said they are satisfied that the nominees are credible to take the country to the next level in terms of reforms.

“The President and Prime Minister can decide who among the three contenders in each category will lead the country,” said Kavuludi.

He added that the commission worked with those who applied for the positions and they tried to ensure regional balance.

The commission chairman is Kavuludi and his deputy is Esther Chui-Colombin while Mary Awor, Murshid Mohamed, Ronald Musengi and Major Muia Mutia are members.
