Kanu denies supporting Raila bid

Updated Monday, September 24th 2012 at 00:00 GMT +3

Kanu has clarified that it has not yet made a decision on who to support for presidency in the General Election.

Director of Elections Ally Khan said the final decision lies with the National Delegates Council.

“It is the party’s highest decision making organ and will decide whom to back,” he said.

He refuted press reports that the party had opted for Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Khan said the party’s position was explained by Chairman Gideon Moi, who declared members would have the final say on the candidate.

“The party cannot, therefore, have different positions on the same matter,” the official said in a statement.

Khan said Gideon’s statement was clear and wondered why it was being taken out of context.

While campaigning for Kanu’s candidate for the Ndhiwa’s by-election, Gideon said Kanu would not field a presidential candidate in 2013 polls.

Party Secretary General Nick Salat further told Ndhiwa residents that Kanu would seek friends in the region to maintain its national outlook.

call for aspirants

“We subscribe to unity of all Kenyans and that is why we have come to seek friendship as we will do in other parts of the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, party aspirants are gearing up for the October 1 meeting at party headquarters in Nairobi.
