The Mater Hospital celebrated its Golden Jubilee yesterday with the opening of a 31-bed medical wing to cater for the growing number of in-patients.
The hospital, that was marking 50 years since inception, opened the new medical wing increasing the bed capacity to 174.
“This wing that has nine beautiful self-contained rooms will increase our bed capacity to 174 and help us cater for the growing number of in-patients,” noted the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer John Muriithi.
Speaking during the ceremony at the institution in Nairobi, former Vice President Moody Awori hailed the facility for remaining in the forefront in providing quality medical care at affordable cost.
Mr Awori singled out the Mater Cardiac Programme, which he said had given hope to many poor families whose children are born with heart defects. The former VP regretted that patients in public hospitals have been suffering for the last one week after doctors downed their tools demanding more pay.
“As we celebrate these achievements, let’s remember those denied treatment over the last 10 days. Both parties should find a mutual and satisfactory solution and enable the doctors return to work,” Awori said. Thendu said this was the second time in three days that donkeys have been found slaughtered.
