Universities employees' strike paralyse learning

Updated Sunday, September 9th 2012 at 00:00 GMT +3

The University of Nairobi has asked its students not to report on Monday as the strike by lecturers continue.

The university announced postponement of reopening for second to sixth year students until further notice.

“This is to inform students scheduled to report on Monday September 10 and September 24 that their commencement has been postponed until further notice,” the Registrar stated in an advert in the local dailies.

Operations in public universities have been paralysed since Friday after employees went on strike to demand higher pay.

University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) Secretary General Mutuura Mberia led lecturers and members of University Non-Teaching Staff Union (Untesu) and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels and Educational Institutions and Hospitals Association (Kudheiha) in downing their tools, leaving students who reported for registration stranded.

The unions want the Government to resume the stalled 2010-2012 Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations.
