Police have seized 31 sacks of bhang with a street value of about Sh10 million in Namanga, at the Kenya- Tanzania border.
The driver of a truck that had the contraband escaped a police dragnet on Thursday morning.
Officers said the cargo originated from Zambia and was headed for Nairobi.
The bhang had been packed at the bottom of the truck loaded with sacks of maize to avoid suspicion, police said.
Kajiado OCPD Stephene Ng’etich said the narcotics weighed almost a tonne.
Mr Ng’etich noted cases of transportation of bhang from Tanzania to Kenya were on the rise.
“They claim the bhang from the region is of high quality and is on demand here, but we have intensified our patrols and alertness to tame the practice,” said Ng’etich on the telephone.
Another vehicle loaded with 325 kilogrammes of bhang was last month seized in the area. Police said the cargo was valued at Sh3.2 million.
Both vehicles are being detained by police. Ng’etich said they are hunting for the driver of the lorry, who escaped.
Weapons recovered
Meanwhile, three suspected thugs were on Wednesday night shot dead in two separate robbery incidents in Nairobi and weapons recovered.
Two of the suspects were shot dead by police in Zimmerman and several household goods they had stolen recovered.
