The deceased identified as Joseph Wekesa hails from Kong’ololo village of Teso North District, Busia County.
Wekesa returned without his father.
Residents suspect the deceased’s son whom they accused of being a known serial killer.
Teso Hu man rights activist Michael Odeke said the villagers found the man’s body lying in a pool of blood adjacent to the river.
“The elderly man’s body was found two days later dumped along river Lwakhakha with brutal cuts. He might have succumbed to excessive bleeding,” he noted.
Mr Odeke said the suspect, however, claimed he left his father in the company of other unknown men drinking together.
Officers from Lwakhakha police post have arrested the deceased’s son who is being interrogated to assist them with investigations.
“Initial investigations indicated that the deceased may have been killed elsewhere and his body dragged to the river,” stated an officer who sought anonymity.
Ugandan police have so far released the body and blood samples have been taken to Mbale District hospital for postmortem examination.
They have called on the residents to volunteer any information they have concerning the case.
