Two men were on Monday evening arrested after they allegedly raped a woman in Kibera, Nairobi.
The public attacked the two before police rescued them. The woman, 28, is admitted to a city hospital and is in stable condition.
Nairobi police boss Anthony Kibuchi said police were on patrol in the slum when they were alerted of the incident.
Elsewhere, a suspect was shot dead by police in a botched robbery in Nairobi’s Huruma estate and a pistol recovered from him.
Police said the man was in the company of three others and were driving in a salon car. Two other suspects were arrested in the confrontation. Insecurity has increased in the past few weeks in the wake of what insiders attribute to a go-slow by some police officers over salary rise.
For the last three weeks, some officers have jammed police lines, making communication impossible after they realised their revised pay deal had not been honoured.
The problem is said to have spread to other major towns and there are fears the implications will be devastating. A review of police salaries was made in 2010. The Government announced the increments will be implemented in three phases.
