One refugee was shot dead and another hurt in a robbery incident in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Turkana West District.

The Monday night incident took place when suspected bandits raided the house of a Somali refugee.

Turkana West Deputy OCPD David Nyabuto said four men armed with two AK47 riffles and clubs attacked the two men in a house and seriously injured them.

He said they rushed the injured men to the International Rescue Committee (IRC) hospital for treatment but the deceased succumbed to his wounds.

He said the second man, who had been hit with clubs, was later discharged from the hospital.

“We have confirmed that one male Somali refugee died while he was being treated at IRC hospital while his colleague was treated and discharged,” said Nyabuto.

Stolen mobiles

The Deputy OCPD said the thugs stole mobile phones and other valuables from the deceased.

Nyabuto said the incident prompted the community to stage a protest within the refugee camp where they hurled stones at local host communities whom they suspect to be behind the incident.

Nyabuto however said they have calmed down the situation after negotiating with elders from the Somali community adding they have assured them of security in the camp.

“The situation in the camp has returned to normal and business has resumed after negotiations,” he said.
