A family land tussle turned tragic when a two-year-old girl burnt to death after a house was set on fire allegedly by her grandfather.
The incident left residents of Ikondokhera village of Nambale District, Busia in disbelief.
The deceased’s father, Justus Ouma, said he left the girl sleeping on Tuesday morning when he went to the farm only to be told by neighbours that his house was burning.
“I rushed back home and found my daughter was no more. The neighbours watched helpless,” he said.
Ouma alleged his father Isambe Ondusie, 60, must have set his house on fire since he had threatened him following a land dispute.
Too late
“I rushed to save my daughter but it was too late because she had already burnt beyond recognition,” said Ouma.
Ouma was living alone with the daughter since he separated with the wife.
Lucas Ouma, the uncle of the deceased who was the first one to rush to the scene, broke the door when he heard the girl screaming but was unable to save her as the burning grass thatched roof fell and buried her in the fire.
He also said they suspect his father was responsible adding that it was not the first time such an incident happened.
Nambale Division DO Vicky Chelagat said she received information and immediately dispatched Administration Police officers to the scene.
