Njuri Ncheke and Rift Valley Councils of Elders have appealed to the Government to recognize the role played by the councils of elders in peace building and dispute resolution.
Speaking at Njuri Ncheke Shrine in Nchiru, Tigania West during a visit by Rift Valley elders, the Government was told to resolve the electronic voting system saga. The elders also promised to support the fight against outlawed groups.
“There is need for the Government to recognize councils of elders in boosting alternative forms of dispute resolution. The Government should provide capacity building for all councils,” read part of the resolutions. The elders said they are looking for an institution of higher learning, which can develop a training programme elders to enable them discharge their duties in line with the Constitution.

Njuri Ncheke Secretary General Phares Rutere who read the resolutions said the elders have agreed to push for the formation of a national council coordinating organ, which will represent elders’ interests in the Government.
“Elders have a role in propagating peace and cohesiveness. We need to identify genuine councils of elders to create a culture of responsibility in all communities,” he said.
