The war against the Al Shabaab militant group might have led to thousands of Kenyan youth turning up for recruitment into the armed forces.

Lieutenant Colonel Lazarus Wafula said military officers believe that excitement among the youth has been caused by the vigour and motivation Kenyan soldiers have displayed in their fight against the militant group in Somalia.

Wafula, who is also the Senior Recruitment Officer in the ongoing recruitment, told journalists at Nanyuki Municipal Stadium during recruitment for Laikipia East District, that Kenyans have become more patriotic and are more willing to serve the country.

“There is a general excitement and initially we thought people would not come out. In Rumuruti, we were overwhelmed,” said the Kenya Navy soldier.

The ongoing recruitment exercise is for the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Air Force soldiers.

During this exercise in Nanyuki Municipal Stadium, over 250 males and more than 30 females turned up for recruitment into the armed forces.

Col Wafula said no cases of corruption and canvassing were reported in the three districts in Laikipia County where recruitment has taken place so far.

In Laikipia West District where the exercise was conducted on Tuesday, six people were recruited while four were from Nyahururu District.

The officer said the candidates are subjected to examinations and thorough scrutiny to ensure that only qualified individuals are recruited.

The recruitment was still ongoing by the time The Standard was going to the press. The team heads to Sirma in Laikipia Friday.
