The Ajuran clan in Wajir County has declared the senator seat their own, two weeks after the Degodia clan claimed positions of governor and women representative.

The clan went further and endorsed Adan Omar Enow for the senate. The declaration subsequently sets off a political showdown with the Ogaden clan, scheduled a meeting for August 3 in which they are to discuss modalities of landing the senator’s seat.

It remains to be seen whether they will settle for the post of deputy governor after an earlier meeting resolved they would go for nothing less than a senator. Abdirahaman Hassan Olow and nominated MP Mohammed Affey were being fronted as possible candidates.

The Ajuran declaration comes after a series of clan caucuses in which a 36-member consultative council was tasked with the responsibility of nominating a candidate.

Secret ballot

Trader AhmedSheikh Abdullahi Yarre chaired the council. The council settled for Enow after a secret ballot supervised by local religions leaders. Others who had expressed interest include Osman Gure, Osman Abdikarim, and Ahmed Mohamed. Enow, an educationalist and a former human resouce manager with the Teachers Service Commission, said he would embrace a consultative leadership to fight poverty.

The 34 year-old said he would tackle education and improve maternal and child healthcare.

He also said the Wajir International Airport should be well used to market livestock in the Middle East.

The Ajuran political leaders, including Wajir North MP Mohamed Hussein Gabow, and his predecessor Abdullahi Ibrahim Ali, expressed confidence the clan would achieve its political interest.
