Towards the end of the race, four runners trailed her gasping for breath as she swiftly approached the finishing line.

The young Esther Aoko ran even faster creating a distance between her and the chasing pack, eventually winning the 200m race during Ugunja district championships.

The Standard Seven pupil at Uholwe Primary who turned 12 this year was crowned Ugunja district 200m champion.

The elated youngster says she started running at a tender age. She could run to and from school every morning.

“Running is in my blood. Our home is in quite a distance from school so I always have to hurry to get there in time. That’s how I got used to running,” she said half smiling

Compared to other participants in the 200m race, Esther was the youngest.

Asked how she managed such a feat, Esther said determination was key.

“Well, it was just a little bit tough but I had to strive for the win,” she said

Despite her success, Esther is not resting in her laurels. She still believes that a lot needs to be done when it come to public interest and participation in the sport.

She adds that most of the pupils in their school have to be forced to the field to run.

“Here in Siaya County athletics is still isolated as many boys and girls prefer football,” she said
