Teen from TEMEKE

Updated Friday, July 20th 2012 at 00:00 GMT +3

Pulse writer Mkala Mwaghesha takes a peep at the latest bongo sensation Aslay Isihaka, who has become a household name across the region since November, when he released his hit single Nakusemea.

In his Nakusemea debut video, 16-year-old Aslay Isihaka aka Dogo Aslay acts the innocent teen. His father is a flirt and the young boy can’t understand why the old man goes lavishing with town girls every time he goes out.

Besides, the immoral dad never leaves enough cash for the mother who has to hussle all day to make ends meet.

“It is a pity you have left behind Sh20 at home yet you are buying these girl fried chicken... Even if you try to bribe me by buying me roasted meat, after we get back home, I will report it all to mum…Your actions hurt me so much…,” innocently, Aslay sings in his melodious bongo groove that has everyone in East Africa talking.

Barely a year after he launched his singing career, Aslay has become a household name in the region. Music analysts believe that his soft melodious voice, acting talent and lyrical prowess are his main strength, which could see his budding career propel to continental fame.

“I released my ten-song debut album a week ago. I am optimistic my career will take off well,” he told Pulse during an exclusive interview when he visited Mombasa last weekend.

“I am barely 18 and trying hard not to let celebrity life and fame go into my head. Girls are always embracing me wherever I go but I am still too young to engage in any sexual behaviour, leave alone have a girlfriend or take alcohol.

“I am focused and this, being my second concert in Kenya, elevates my status across East Africa,” he offered.

As he comes out in the video, the rather humble boy has his vision well cut, balancing his time between school, music and his friends. It’s only after his class work that he attends his music lessons before recording and performing over the weekend.

“I have a manager called Fella. I am under the mentorship of TMK Wanaume Family whose members I regard as my best friends. We hang out a lot.

It is with TMK Wanaume Family, the finest hip-hop outfit in Tanzania, that he has done most of his collaborations.
