A Belgian national has been arrested for allegedly defiling a minor repeatedly in Shanzu, Mombasa County.
Mr Perniaux Allain Rober, 59, was accused of frequently luring the girl, 12, into his apartment before committing the act.
The apartment is situated in the exclusive Melrose Place in Shanzu, said to be inhabited mainly by foreign retirees.
Unconfirmed reports reveal that for two years the man has been allegedly colluding with the girl’s mother to have the child visit him in his house.
Residents claim that the girl’s mother seemed keen on making money rather than protecting her daughter.
The bizarre events only came to light following a tip-off by a suspicious neighbour who raised alarm after watching the girl enter the apartment alone every afternoon for several months.
The neighbour alerted police who came to the girl’s rescue.
Kisauni OCPD Julius Wanjohi yesterday said the suspect is being interrogated and will be arraigned in court today.
Sexual exploitation of underage girls and boys, according to Shanzu residents, is rampant but underreported at the Coast.
Area Chief Rabia Maneno and the girl’s headteacher Daniel Mulanda confirmed reports the 12-year-old’s mother received money from the Belgian.
“I was informed that a tourist was molesting a minor, who is in Class Two,” said Ms Maneno.
