How can you describe your relationship with your boss? Do you fear approaching him or her because you do not know how he or she will react? How does he or she relate with your colleagues?
Many workers have a good working relationship with their bosses. However, some have a frosty one that is often shrouded with fear and mistrust.
Your boss plays a very big role to play in your career progression. Indeed, he often holds the key to your happiness at work, which leads to job satisfaction and future career growth.
That is why you must improve your relationship with your boss. This way, you will secure your future as you build a professional working bond with him. After all, he has the mandate of appraising you,and such appraisals can be lopsided and prone to bias if your relationship is unsteady.
Moreover, having a working relationship with your boss will not only reduce the constant worry usually associated with a tense workplace, but will help you realise your career goals. This will contribute to your general well being and will see increased productivity.
How to do it
So how can you improve your relationship with your boss?
The process can be arduous, a strong will to overcome the barriers and the results can be equally rewarding.
Immanuel Oloo, a career counselor says the best place to start is to communicate your needs and concerns to your boss.
“You will be surprised how willing your boss is to help or to resolve pending issues. If you have not been relating well, you may be amazed to discover that the difference was all based on a misinterpretation,” says Oloo.
“Learn to show appreciation for what you think your boss is doing in the right way. They also have feelings and when you show approval for a job well done, it encourages your boss to endeavour to be even a better leader,” he adds.
Oloo adds that it always pays to avoid cover-ups when you make a mistake.
