Parents and leaders in Teso have protested over five pupils who have dropped out of school after conceiving. One of the pupils at Katakwa Primary School in class eight was impregnated by her classmate who is in hiding.

Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) chairperson, Mary Okedi threatened to lead parents to demonstrate if the Government does not punish those behind the pregnancies.

Area Education Officer, Wangatho Maina, said he was aware of the case adding that investigations have started.

“I want to assure parents that we will take action against those responsible,” he added.

Okedi noted that girls were being married off at the expense of their education and accused the provincial administration and the education office of failing to protect the girl child.

Confirming the incident, Katakwa location acting chief, Erneyo Majune said the school management committee was to blame for failing to report the matter to his office.

Angurai South ward councillor, Moses Ote raised red flag on some members of the school committee for being involved in the saga.

The civic leader appealed to girl child activists to pursue the matter with a view to nabbing the culprits.

Ote lamented that Teso District cannot compete favorably with other regions if girls will continue dropping out of school at such a tender age.

Teso North DC, Josphine Onunga said parents are to blame for failing to report the matter to the relevant authorities early enough.
