Palaver: 07/08/09

On matters human rights in sub-Saharan Africa, Kenya is ranked alongside Ethiopia, Uganda and Zimbabwe as having a bad record, reports by International Federation for Human Rights, World Organisation Against Torture, Kenya Human Rights Commission and Observatory for Protection of Human Rights Defenders. So whose clean record was Moses Wetang’ula defending during the one-on-one with his US counterpart, Hillary Clinton? What are we? Best among the worst?

Why won’t they just let it be? Even after Barack Obama made his birth certificate public last July, birthers are still not convinced he was born in the US and is therefore ineligible to be president, according to the US constitution. South Korea went to great lengths to teach citizens English catchphrases and hygiene ahead of the Seoul Olympics; China literally shut down hundreds of factories ahead of the Beijing games to clear smog that threatened to scare away some athletes; G20 host cities hide all their beggars, commercial sex workers and street people ahead of the meets. Palaver thought debate and posturing on the need to conserve the Mau was over. Suddenly one William (Samoei) puts together 25 Rift Valley MPs to have a ‘chat’ with the president about their concerns. Next day, the other William (ole) gathers 13 of his own Rift Valley MPs also to rubbish the former. In the midst of it, one Joseph Nanok says his community, the Turkana, own like 40 per cent of the province and need to be heard. What happened to the Save the Mau Action Plan? Move this thing forward. Please.
